How supermarket refrigeration is HEATING UP the planet

Finally some supermarkets are beginning to take the climate change impact of refrigeration seriously

Welcome to the Environmental Investigation Agency’s third supermarket refrigeration survey, aimed at encouraging retailers to move away from climate-wrecking HFC refrigerants. During 2010 we have seen a significant improvement in the amount of retailers going HFC-free. A total of 239 stores in the UK now use climate-friendly refrigeration – up from 46 last year and just 14 three years ago!

Despite big improvements by some retailer others continue to lag and the gap between the two groups is widening.  The four supermarkets heading the pack are Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Marks and Spencer; Morrisons, Co-operative Group and Lidl are mid-field and trailed by the laggards Iceland, Aldi and Asda.
